These issues were on and off for two days but have seemed to be "mostly" resolved as of last night. The issue impacted over 15,000 users.

The root cause was identified as a service infrastructure issue in North America that disrupted traffic processing during maintenance, leading to elevated load and cascading failures.

The trouble with botnets is how effective they are and easily spread they are. Most people don't even know what they are or how their devices get infected or impacted. This was a fairly large attack but not massive, still concerning.

The botnet known as Kimwolf has infected more than 2 million Android devices by tunneling through residential proxy networks, according to findings from Synthient.

"Key actors involved in the Kimwolf botnet are observed monetizing the botnet through app installs, selling residential proxy bandwidth, and selling its DDoS functionality," the company said in an analysis published last week.

Kimwolf was first publicly documented by QiAnXin XLab last month, while documenting its connections to another botnet known as AISURU. Active since at least August 2025, Kimwolf is assessed to be an Android variant of AISURU. There is growing evidence to suggest that the botnet is actually behind a series of record-setting DDoS attacks late last year.

The malware turns infected systems into conduits for relaying malicious traffic and orchestrating distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks at scale. The vast majority of the infections are concentrated in Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia, with Synthient observing approximately 12 million unique IP addresses per week.

Attacks distributing the botnet have been primarily found to target Android devices running an exposed Android Debug Bridge (ADB) service using a scanning infrastructure that uses residential proxies to install the malware. No less than 67% of the devices connected to the botnet are unauthenticated and have ADB enabled by default.

It's suspected that these devices come pre-infected with software development kits (SDKs) from proxy providers so as to surreptitiously enlist them in the botnet. The top compromised devices include unofficial Android-based smart TVs and set-top boxes.

It has been described as an authentication bypass flaw.

"IBM API Connect could allow a remote attacker to bypass authentication mechanisms and gain unauthorized access to the application," the tech giant said in a bulletin.

So the UK is making moves to improve and grow their cyber security efforts which I think is important. I think the future of war and country disputes will be handled over the internet and if your government, businesses, or country as a whole are vulnerable - it can spell for disaster.

Large swaths of the internet went down on Thursday, affecting a range of services, from global cloud platform Cloudflare to popular apps like Spotify. It appears that a Google Cloud outage is at the root of these other service disruptions.

Google Cloud said it started investigating service issues affecting its customers at 11:46 a.m. PT. As of 2:23 p..m PT, the company said it had implemented mitigations, and expects to have its services back up and running within the hour.

“We are currently investigating a service disruption to some Google Cloud services,” said Google Cloud spokesperson Devon Smiley in an email to TechCrunch.

At 11:19 a.m. PT, Cloudflare also said it was investigating service disruptions affecting its customers, according to its status page. At 12:12 p.m. PT, Cloudflare said it was starting to see its services recover after investigating the issue.

“This is a Google Cloud outage,” said Cloudflare spokesperson Ripley Park in an email to TechCrunch. “A limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted. We expect them to come back shortly. The core Cloudflare services were not impacted.”

Thousands of users have reported that popular apps, including Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, and Character.AI, experienced outages on Thursday afternoon, according to the crowdsourced reporting platform DownDetector. AI coding apps such as Cursor and Replit also appeared to go down on Thursday.

If I am not mistaken, this happened last year too. Might not be the same cause but it seems to be happening more and more. I think Microsoft was also having issues because of their reliance on Google for servers. I could be wrong, but that is what I heard.

Coinbase says that customers’ personal information, including government-issued IDs, was stolen in a data breach. The hackers demanded $20 million from the company, CEO Brian Armstrong said in a post on X. Coinbase said it will not pay the hackers’ ransom.

Coinbase said it expects to incur costs of around $180 million to $400 million relating to incident remediation and customer reimbursements.

This is nothing new. With the growing wealth of investments into cryptocurrencies, more threats are looming. I for one keep some of my investments on Coinbase and will be moving it away to a hard wallet for safer keeping.

I think it is important for anyone investing in coins or tokens to make sure they are as secure as possible. Relying on crypto exchange markets to store all your investments is proving to be more and more of a risk.
