I am not very familiar with Man-in-the-Middle attacks. I know they happen but it doesn't seem like a term used very often. A least not from what I have seen. Can someone explain how these work and how to avoid facing one of these attacks if possible?
From my understanding, a MitM attack is a type of cyber attack where the hacker intercepts and alters communication between two parties. This is done often to steal sensitive information or inject malware.
To protect yourself, just do the standard things...
- Use a VPN
- Avoid public WiFi
- Only visit websites with a secure HTTP connection using SSL
- Keep everything up to date on your system
- And lastly, make use of 2FA on all your important accounts
@mnj918 This is the best approach. I think people overlook how simple cyber security is and it baffles my mind how so many people still end up victims to threats. I understand larger scale attacks but individuals targeting individuals should not be as common of a problem.
An example of one of these attacks could involve using someone's profile on a social media platform such as Facebook and posing as them to retrieve private information from friends and family. This is a very basic level attack but it happens far more often than you would think.
I always tell people to not use public wifi anymore because it is too much of a risk. If you absolutely must do it, have your phone or device set up to where it connects to a VPN first and always use security measures that you should have in place such as 2FA and very strong passwords.
