Is there a way to get out of ransomware without paying?

Someone at work recently had to help a client with ransomware and our boss just ended up covering the cost for him to get his stuff back. It was nice of him and all but I feel like there are ways around this. And if you pay, it likely just ends up putting a target on your head or your company's head. It cost him 10k.

Absolutely possible but this is why backups are insanely important. Make sure you always have them. If you have not backed up your data, you may need to format your hard disk and reinstall an operating system. This will remove the ransomware from your system, but you will lose all your data.

@eekopenly I have had to do this before and can confirm it works. My father's PC was infected and because I had him backing everything up already, it was easy to just wipe the PC clean and reinstall everything.

In some cases you can report it and local law enforcement will help deal with the situation. It really depends on the level of attack and who is actually being attack. Sadly, you are more likely to get help as a company rather than being an individual.
