I am wondering what the best approach would be if I believe someone or some group has accessed my personal data and has yet to do anything with it to the best of my knowledge. I am sure there is an approach one would take for something like this. I want to know what the best approach is.
The approach I would take starts with determining what data you think has been breached. Things like card numbers, access to accounts, or if you are in the US your social security number. From there change all your passwords that have personal information on them. This can be e-mails, places you shop, bank logins, and so on. I would contact your bank and let them know you may have been breached and put a temporary pause on all credit cards. You can issue a credit freeze which will block anyone from opening credit cards or taking out loans in your name.
I had this happen to me a number of years ago. The first thing I did was contact the bank. I had them put a hold on my transactions for 72 hours. I did the same with credit cards. Changed all my passwords next for all my major accounts. Anything tied to money. I also changed my information to generic address for accounts I no longer used. I have since made different e-mails for different access so not everything is in one place and have blocks in place that don't allow transactions over a certain amount without confirming it.
Thank you both for your approaches. I think you both have pointed out things I would have overlooked. I am going to make some notes for this and will begin to make some calls in the morning. Nothing has happened yet but I would rather be safe than sorry. I did contact my bank right away and they have already issued me out a new card with a new number.
