It is becoming more and more of an issue and while I am careful, I feel like I can be doing a better job at protecting myself as well as making sure my parents are safe too. They are older and my father has already had his identity stolen.
What are some steps I can take to further prevent identity theft?
The main one I always harp on is strong passwords and never using the same password more than one time. If you have trouble remembering longer passwords, then make use of a password manager. You also want to use 2FA where available. Just making sure no one can gain access to your accounts will go a long way.
And it is worth noting... Never, ever, EVER share personal information on websites like social media, forums, or suspicious online shops.
Outside of strong passwords and 2FA which everyone should be using at this point, you want to always do updates when they are available. I know it can become annoying but they almost always have changes that enable better security.
Phishing scams tend to get older people the most so making your parents aware of those and better educating them on the topic can help. Most people over the age of 50 get their identify stolen through phishing e-mails and scam messages on Facebook.
It seems to be a growing issue so I can understand why anyone would be concerned.
I always tell people the key to being safe is just making sure everything is up to date. Outside of that you really have to be sure the sites you visit are secure. The easiest way of knowing this is checking for the lock symbol next to your URL bar.
