I read a number of articles over the last few weeks talking about how there is an increased risk for hackers targeting routers and that many of the systems used by ISPs are outdated and easily hacked. Now I am a bit concerned. It is something I eventually planned on switching but I may have to do it sooner rather than later. Would making this change better protect me?

In many cases, yes but not in all cases. It depends on what your ISP provider is using but you would have more control if you use your own.
